TRUTH COMES OUT

"Is Robert moving back to Hawaii or entering a nursing home? Not that I care....I just hope if he's planning on doing himself in, that he doesn't make a mess at the house. Honestly, if I couldn't taste food, had health problems, couldn't hear, had  no friends and hadn't had any sex in a dozen years, I wouldn't have much of a reason to go on. Don't tell him I said that. His life is my worst nightmare."

Just had to share this email with you.  Knew when had the stroke that former 'friend' could not wait for my departure from his home.

Mind, the old geezer is very much alive and coping rather nicely with new situation in life.

In other emails, the old geezer being 'FAT' and liking his ciggies are two more reasons not to like the old geezer.  Fancy that...

All this from an ageing homosexual who is despersate to stop the clock from showing his own slide into 'old age'.  Guess if one has buckets of cash to spend on 'face work' and endless supply of cheap wine, others do not matter.

NEW FRIEND FROM GLASGOW

Robert
I am a 32 year old Scottish, deaf, gay man.  I came across your blog some time back and find myself returning often to see what the bizarre nutter from across the pond is up to.  I find myself having a good laugh more oft than not and think of you as a nutter in the nicest of ways.  Having been deaf from birth, am sure that losing hearing after a lifetime of sound must be very hard to deal with.  I think you are dealing with it very well and hope that you continue to do so.  I admire your courage and positive attitude.  Feels a bit strange to be sending you a mushy fan letter but for some time have wanted to contact you and let you know that you have a friend in Glasgow.  Is it alright that I consider you a mate of mine?  Have you learned to sign? I am on skype and would be happy to chat with you, or teach you how to sign so that we could chat.  You have a very open and readable face and think it would be rather easy to teach you and have very interesting conversations.  Knowing that you like to get unusual bits in the post, have sent you this offering about Scottish Friendship, hope you get the meaning of without feeling put upon.  Have sent you an invite to skype with, when you get ear sorted out and want to spend time chatting again.  I feel a bit silly about writing but want to let you know I would like very much to get to know you better.  Another reason I took to your blog is that we share the same name, Robert, a good name to have in Scotland.

1. When you are sad – I will help you get pissed and plot revenge against the bastard who made you sad.
2. When you are blue — I’ll try to dislodge whatever is choking you.
3. When you smile — I know you’re thinking of something that I would probably want to be involved in.
4. When you are scared — I will take the piss out of you every chance I get until you’re NOT.
5. When you are worried — I will tell you stories about how much worse it could be until you STOP WHINING!
6. When you are confused — I will try to use only little words.
7. When you are sick – Stay the hell away from me until you are well again.
I don’t want whatever you have.
8. When you fall, I will laugh at you, you clumsy arse,
but I might help you up.
9. This is my oath…. I pledge it to the end. ‘Why?’ you may ask;
Because you are my friend.
Friendship is like pissing your pants, everyone can see it, but only you can feel the true warmth.

“Taking the piss” out of someone means teasing them.
Piss is important. When you hear the word a lot, you’re no longer in England; urine Scotland.

The old geezer is very touched by the email received from a reader.  One can never have too many friends and this chap sounds as if he might be brilliant to know.  Mind, the offer to learn how to sign is most generous and would come in handy down the road.  Never thought of using skype to sign but can see how it would work.

What the email proves is that me blog has opened up a huge world to.  There be some who think spending so much time on is a total waste and one never actually meets 'real' people.  What a load of tosh that is.

READ THE SIGN!!!

The old geezer had the above sign made and placed above bed in room at Renown Hospital.

However brilliant the staff on the ward was, it is a sign of what was lacking.  All day long, folks would enter the room to do something to or want to ask something of the old geezer.  Some of the staff at hospital were aware of the need to allow MOI to read face, lips and they moved close and spoke loud and slow.  SOME.  There were others who did a creep up and expected MOI to know what the wanted of.  Got right upset when they did not get a reply, or up set that the old geezer has no volume control on voice and is known to be LOUD.  Wore me out it did.  So much so that when offered the ability to go next door to Renown Rehab, turned it down.

At first MOI was going to lay blame on hospital but got to thinking and came to realize that hospital is just like society in general.  Folks do not do deaf.

It is right hard to learn how to read lips and faces.  What with the ever changing cast at hospital it made it tiring each and every day.  Being deaf is not a blatant disability.  Without me device in ear, folks assume MOI can hear even if they are far from , or behind back.  Am clever but not that clever.

Right odd that even after the sign was fashioned and placed over me bed, the problem continued.  Came to believe that some folks did not want to deal with deaf, just like at home.  Was wrong of MOI to assume hospital would be different.

No clue how long the old geezer will be able to hear anything.  Too early to tell.  One wonders how folks will deal with total deaf old geezer.  Or for that matter how the old geezer will.  For now, MOI will just have to wait and see if device works better when the operation sorts self down the road.

MOI IS RENAMED - "AGEUSIA"

Robert, the New "Ageusia"

Leave it to an avid reader of me blog to find the name for what is going on with loss sense of taste.  The clever clog believes that MOI has Dysgeusia but further reading by MOI suggests it may well be Ageusia.  Truth be told, since last time looked neither of us has a degree in medicine, and MOI is the one with the first hand experience, am inclined to go with the first.  That being Ageusia or a combination of both...

Ageusia  is the loss of taste functions of the tongue, particularly the inability to detect sweetness, sourness, bitterness, saltiness, and umami (meaning "pleasant/savory taste").

Dysgeusia  is the distortion of the sense of taste.

Ear infections, hypothyroidism, age, medications for Asthma and allergies, have all played a part in what the old geezer is now dealing with.  When the good doctor cut the nerve during the surgery to remove disease in ear, he just brought down the last part that was holding 'taste' together.

Another, avid reader, struck a cord with the old geezer as they went through exactly what is happening to MOI.  The reader went on to tell that the loss revealed some interesting things.

After surgery, the very same as MOI, all of my experiences befell.  Being overweight, OK obese, like MOI, the reader wondered if the not wanting to eat was going to cause problems with recovery or worse.  During 4 months of not eating a great deal, the pounds flew off, 90 plus to be exact.  It was discovered that the 'normal' amount thought needed to be healthy was not the norm for them.  For years, amount of calories to control weight was much lower than believed.  With the complete turn off to food, the push back from the table was much easier.  The sense of being 'full' happened much sooner than before.  Whilst the taste of food is completely gone, so is the revulsion to the sight of food.  Meals are on the very small side and need to eat has replaced the want to eat.

Two weeks on from surgery, the old geezer has to struggle to eat.  Some things are more repulsive than others.  Seems, soups go down well.  Round 2pm is when the attempt is made to eat.  There are a few cups of coffee and juice is drunk throughout the day.   Tons and tons of water are had.  What is with the dry mouth?

I have sat at table whilst house mates tuck into plates of food and it does not bother.  Even have helped out with preparation of.  I feel fine.  I have no hunger.  My healing seems to not be affected.  Can feel the ear getting better and the scar behind ear is doing nicely.

Truth be told, MOI has more than a little fat that can be lost.  It was thought that the large of amount lost over the last two years was pretty much the limit.  The scales seemed to not want to go much lower.

That may not be the case any longer.  The old geezer refuses to weigh in until the day before return to see doctor.  But, HE knows that the pounds are coming off.  Can feel it.  May well be massive amount of water at first, but then that was the case in first attempt to lose weight, the real weight dropped off as well.

As always, much of this post may be of no interest to some.  Readers of me blog are not plagued by extra weight and seem to possess perfect bodies........and pigs fly.....
