FOR ANDY VASQUEZ - US MARINE

SEMPER FI

Patriotic Music

GOD BLESS AMERICA

WE REMEMBER

OLD GLORY
Round noon yesterday, residents and visitors of the Linda Villa joined hands and bowed heads to remember the brave men and women who gave so much to keep us free.  Adult and Child alike took the moment serious and reflected on.

We few were joined by Supervisor Andy Vasquez, who read a piece about the American Flag and reminded us the cost in lives FREEDOM has taken.

The community at large may well little note the Civic Pride at the Linda Villa, it can not ignore the results of it.

This old geezer is right proud of all of the lovely folks who took part in the cook-out.

There was patriotic music, food, drink and games for the children.  Three lovely ladies had prepared salads.  What salads they were, food fit for a king.  A mum got her children to help bake cupcakes.  The frosting was in the spirit of the holiday.  They were mouth-watering.

My dears, if James ever sends the snaps of the event, there will be much to see of the fun day had by all.  Mind, James is a bit slow and it may take some time to get the snaps...

FREE RIDE IS OVER

Bit Rough to Save The Unwilling

My dears, it is not in the nature of this old geezer to stand by and watch one liked be picked clean by 'vultures'.  That is the current scenario being played out with folks known to Murray Kay.  Sensing 'blood in the water', or dying flesh in the field, vultures overhead and sharks in the water have come full force to get whatever is left of poor Murray Kay.

Tragic events have been haunting Murray for some time, many of which are of his own making.  Not keeping eye on business has left him in a state of near ruin.  Personal and business life have mixed so well that it is hard to know where one begins and the other ends.  Factor in Murray's need to be 'loved & liked' by one and all, it soon becomes clear that less than honourable souls have found way into the pocket book of.

Harsh as it may sound, this old geezer is most concerned about the future of the Linda Villa.  Much has been achieved here and it is here  success has the greater chance of taking root.  Would be daft to allow anything or anyone ruin.   Even Murray...

Events of yesterday have made clear  something has got to change.  Murray, aided by 'greedy friends', is hellbent on ruination.  Too much drink, too many ciggies and lack of proper sleep have got Murray so knackered, he no longer seems to care if he loses all.

I could not stand by any longer.  Told all of the hangers-on to clear off.  Stopped the drinking and put Murray to bed.  Told one and all, if Murray came out and continued to party in public, would call the coppers and have him arrested for being 'intoxicated in public'.  I kid you not, it has gone this far.

Mean and hateful things were said to MOI by the departing crowd.  Right odd, how folks leaching off of one, will fight to the death for every crumb to be had.  It is the 'end of month' blues local and many of the folks round Murray of late are in need until 'benefits' arrive.

I will not allow my reputation to be ruined by the actions of a self-pitying business partner.  I made promises to the lovely folks moving into the Linda Villa that are going to be kept.  I made promises to James and his family.  To Paul.  Most of all, I made promises to the community that evil would stay away from this part of the road.

I am desperate to believe that Murray is not a lost cause.  Once more, I ride to his rescue.  One last time, try to get Murray to face up to his demons and get the help he needs before all is lost.

I will survive, I always do.  However this plays out, this old geezer will keep trying to make the road, the community and the Linda Villa more brilliant.  As a business partner or community activist.

I tell you all of this, dear readers, as I want one and all to know that it is never easy to do the right thing.  Might well be the reason many do not follow that path.  Truth be told, went to me bed last night and worried that I had gone too far in me caring and should have just ignored the drama.  It is not pleasant to have hate hurled at, or to have to chide a grown man into bed.  I am desperate to hold fast to the belief that it is not 'end of days' at Linda Villa...

PAY HOMAGE TO THE BRAVE

WE OWE OUR FREEDOM TO THE PRICE PAID BY THE BRAVE MEN AND WOMEN WHO SERVED WITH HONOUR ON THE FIELD OF BATTLE

NEVER FORGET THE PRICE OF FREEDOM

LESS WE FORGET THE PRICE PAID FOR OUR 'HOLIDAY'

EVIL CREATURES PISS NO MORE

Mural of a 'guarded piss'
The snap on left may offend some.  This old geezer uses to tell the tale of tide turning at the Linda Villa and not having to take the piss anymore.

Weekend past, it came to pass that 'evil creatures' who were not ever going to leave were offered a deal to take their leave.  One and all decamped and took with them sticks of furniture, animals and troubled visitors.

It was a long time in coming and up to departure, the pissing had been one way, the complex and all in had to take whatever was dished out.  Right odd how 'evil creatures' know exactly how far they can go in causing trouble without the coppers taking away.

With the departure of the 'evil creatures', order returns to the Linda Villa.  Children and adults can prove that good behaviour is superior to wiched anti-social behaviour.

Have no desire to go on endlessly about the problems had.  Truth be told, it is a chapter best closed and never re-visited.

Now comes the re-building period.  Units made ready and ever effrt made to make the property shine for new neighbours to move in.  A new beginning.

It is planned that a Memorial Day celebration will be held this coming week-end.  The slip&slide for the wee ones will come out.

OH, HAPPY DAYS...

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Dear Appeal Democrat Editor,

Folks local ask constantly why any decent person would want to reside in Linda.

Your newspaper wastes no time in reporting 'crime' in Linda (it makes for a clever story),
and many of the positive stories and images are left unreported.

How hubristic is that?

Urban blight that exists in Linda is not entirely the fault of landlords or home owners. What is oft
reported is how mean landlords are to tenants and the scales are weighted down in favour of
the tenant. How unfair.

Landlords and homeowners who try to provide affordable housing to the poor are many times left in a position that gives bad tenants the ability to stay until 'thousands' are owed before they get
evicted.

I am angry. Just recently, Kay Properties had to offer 'cash for keys' to remove tenants from a unit they would not
leave. Rents were not paid. Not for valid reason, unless not wanting to pay rent is a valid reason. Trouble
caused by tenants gone bad spreads, and in short order lays waste all round, they poison all with the evil they
bring into the community.
Calling the coppers is not an avenue with much hope as it is considered a 'civil' matter. There is not much the coppers can do.

I am old fashioned enough to believe that if you have a problem, you ring up the coppers and contact elected local
officials. Lucky for this old geezer, there exists in Linda, coppers and elected officials who care passionately about Linda.

Sheriff Steve Durfor and Supervisor Andy Vasquez have been brilliant in trying to help sole the blight caused by tenants gone
bad. It is a daily battle to show the community that anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated. No matter how small, it is
addressed. The 'broken window' approach is being used with effect.

The power of the press is massive and the Appeal Democrat should do all possible to foster good public relations between residents, coppers and
local elected officials. Not because it is what I want, but because it is the right thing to do. Civic Pride & Moral Responsibility are traits that
the Appeal Democrat should go out of way to promote. A little flag waving should happen more oft than on Memorial Day or 4th of July.

Linda is a valued part of Yuba County and should receive more attention to it than it has in the past. What makes Linda so valued is its residents,
the folks who never departed when things turned to custard.

The role of the Appeal Democrat is to educate and illuminate the locals, along with selling adverts. You might be gobsmacked by number
of folks willing to purchase your newspaper if they felt the Appeal Democrat truly cared about and valued.

As these things go, this letter does not have a reportage of shots fired, blood flowing in street, dead drug dealers. It is a blatant plea
to you, the editor, to tell folks that Linda can be more brilliant if given half a chance.

My dears, I am a bit wordy, it will be a challenge to see if MOI can edit down and still keep the flavour...

LIBATIONS FLOW AT LINDA VILLA BIRTHDAY BASH FOR JAMES

James R Rhoads celebrates 35 years of living
My dears, one oft forgets that even 'older' lads need to be remembered on birthday.  James being no exception, was right giddy yesterday when many of his mates and family gathered round to help him feel the love felt for his being among us.

Dragging out the massive barbie, all things were made ready for a fun time.  Chairs were cleaned, table set and all sort of treats to be had were made ready.

James thinks himself a bit like Gordon Ramsey, he wanted to be the one in charge of cooking up the meat.  Mind, he does fire up a mean weenie and the steak was quite tender.  Neat trick when you consider that James was making sure that libations found way to to ward off thirst created by the heat of the barbie...  I doubt that anything could have prevented 'himself' from basking in all of the attention being paid to.

James actually turns 35 on Monday, but like The Queen, feels the need to have a 'public' celebration and a most 'private' celebration.

Some 20 adults attended as well as equal number of children.

Along with the meat, there were snacks, candy, soda and the aforementioned libations.  The wee ones were in glory with the soda, candy, ice cream & cake.  Older folks needed no prompt from this old geezer to enjoy the wine, beer and scotch.  So many libations were had that 7 bottles of wine, 2 bottles of scotch and case of beer went empty.  Never let it be said that MOI does not know how to makes folks 'happy'.

Murray Kay attended, after hosting a cook-up at the caravan park.  Having contributed one bottle of scotch, he was not about to miss out on.  Discovered in Hawaii that Murray never met a bottle of scotch he did not like.  Truth be told he also made sure that he has a large piece of cake and huge serving of ice cream.

Paul, me long suffering flatmate was also at party.  Paul had a long hose attached to for air and made sure he had a ring side seat to the gathering.  Paul also made sure that he got his share of drink.  So much so that James and MOI had to pour him into bed at end of party.

Taking it all in, this old geezer missed nothing.  Beth was a giggle after a bottle of wine, Donna held wine glass tight and never missed a drop as she tried to follow all of the chat round her.  Ila, who never drink, had a wine and was very 'happy'.  Victoria also got her cake and ice cream and made sure Larry enjoyed a bit of it as well.  William and Jan held up the patio wall, a neat trick when you consider that they kept glasses charged throughout.  Never would have guessed that William liked wine, would have thought "Jack Daniels", goes to show the trouble one gets into assuming...

With the exception of one child, all at birthday party were well mannered.  Noise was controlled and all drinking of alcohol was confined to patio area.  Taking neighbours into consideration, the party was over and all gone by half 7 in the evening.

I discovered as I cleaning up that me new watch, just purchased in Hawaii, had gone missing.  Was gutted that someone had abused me hospitality and left with a souvenir.  Oddly enough, when out on patio this morn, the missing time piece was found tucked in a chair.  The gods must have told whomever to be nice and return it.

James is a massive chap.  When he bear hugs one it is very hard to get away.  During the party, James got me in such a hold and told that the party was second best ever had.  James loved it all, even the classical music playing.  It is so very easy to be nice to one liked.  James is one of the treasures found and kept close during earlier walk down path of life.  James and his lovely wife are much loved by this old geezer.

MARILYN HAS HER HANDBAG

Marilyn sent this snap for all of the lovely female readers to 'pant' over.  Not quite the one expected, Marilyn fell in love with this one on return to shop.

Truth be told, Marilyn was 'over the moon' when with MOI on visit to shop and could not wait for more lolly to be deposited into account to cover the purchase of.  Will someone please explain why ladies are so gobsmacked by a 'handbag'?

MORE ALOHA FROM HAWAII

Where is 'Dog" when needed?

There may well be a 'sunset' anywhere in the world but nothing tops one experienced in Hawaii.  Something magical about it.  Add to it the massive number of folks who take the time to pause and capture it.  When is the last time you did that?  Took the time to 'drink in 'the beauty of nature'?
The 'FREE' Hula show provided on Kuhio Beach is the best.  Best because it is put on by 'locals' who want to share the ALOHA they have with everyone who visits the islands.
Hawaiian Music may well grate some but there is no denying the beauty of the words sung.
Calling a 'gathering' Hawaiian Style is a thing to behold.  Now if this old geezer could do as well...

The 'hula dancer' we have all come to know and love.
Eat you heart out.  Nothing tastes better than a 'Mai Tai' after a long day of 'sightseeing', shared with a mate over a lovely dinner.  Truth be told, who needs a meal, just pour the drink...
The only 'ROYAL PALACE' in USA.
Waikiki Waterfall
Everywhere you look is water, to bathe in, drink and just to stand beside and feel cool...
Moana Hotel
Photoshop snap of Moana Hotel, where this old geezer rested...
As requested, a lovely snap of Marilyn & Karen, two lovely ladies who will be long remembered and treasured.

Snap of mural in hotel.  Set the tone for feeling 'happy' each morn over a cup of 'Kona' coffee, provided FREE by hotel.

WAIKIKI TALES

Have always been of opinion is bit rude to tease folks while on holiday.  Daily post of buckets of fun had would be rude, but have returned from holiday and can now reveal all details of the lovely time had.

Early in morn of May 10, Murray and this old geezer caught our jet to the Land of Aloha.  No amount of 'pat down' at airport was going to ruin the 'up' mood we were in.  Truth be told, the business of checking in is a turn off.  Important, but not a fun way to start holiday.  This old geezer has metal in body and has to be given a full 'pat down'....  Horrid.

We wanted to begin from moment one and what better way than to fly on Hawaiian Airlines.  The only airline still providing a meal in 'coach'.  AND an ample supple of guava juice to wet thirst.  This old geezer felt giddy as soon as bum hit the comfy seat.
The time 'flew' by and we were soon in Hawaii.  Being three hours 'behind' California, time was gained and we landed early enough to have a full day in the islands.

The hotel was charming as always, and we paid the upgrade to have a high oceanfront room for the whole holiday, and to get early check-in.  Murray was quite keen to hit the beach and wet his shorts...

On the first day, took Murray to "Duke's", restaurant on ocean for Mai Tai and finger food.

Being a creature of habit, this old geezer was in bed with lamp out by 7pm.
The lovely lady on side is Jan, a 40 plus year employee of the Waikiki Circle Hotel.  Jan is now 75 and does not look a day over 50.  Talk about Aloha Spirit, Jan has buckets of and like all of the other employees of hotel, truly belives in 'ohana', they make all guest feel at home and like 'family'.

The Hotel is one of a kind and any one who comes to Hawaii is missing a rare treat if they do not stay in this unique hotel right in the middle of all of the best of Waikiki.

There is a live webcam trained on this statue and folks 'au fait' with, tell mates at home to click on so they can see one on the beach.  MOI and Murray did this throughout the holiday.
Right, so this old geezer is not as grand as 'Duke', large perhaps, but no one placed leis on...
Anyone who comes to Hawaii and is locked in on a schedule is missing the whole magic of the islands.  It is only time, and best left to sort self out in the flow of the day.  Whole time there, MOI let the mood dictate schedule.  Truth be told there was time for everything.  Why rush about??
Placard to left can be found in sub-station of coppers on beach.  They will be ever so kind to and if need be take you to the nick with a smile...
MOI is a walker and from time to time had to rest me legs.  What better spot than at Moana Hotel on beach.  The rockers were ever so inviting and a grand spot to 'people watch'.
If flowers be God's smile, Hawaii is massive amount of the good Lord's pleasure.  Bit hard to be down when there is so much natural beauty about one.
No smell but ever so lovely are the many orchards to be found in public places.  Mind, one enjoys but does not pick.

MOI goes to the birds in Waikiki

Hula Dancers with MOI and friends

It may well be that this old geezer is right odd, but if one listens to the stories round, Hawaii is one place to hear loads of good stories.  Nary a day went by without meeting and chatting to lovely folks.  Folks from Rome, Oslo, Russia, OZ, UK, Canada and all parts of the states were met.  Some were cheeky and all were special.

There was Fred from North Carolina who lived on beach,  Busty Bunny from St. Louis, who is a 'mistress' for 'cross-dressers'  who flogs goods on EBAY.  Fia from Hawaii who is down on luck and lives on beach with wife.  Native Hawaiian and living on the beach due to lack of affordable housing.  Kim and daughters from Vancouver.  I could go on and on, the number of new memories are almost too many.  Each has allowed MOI to create a new image of the islands to hold dear.
As with any trip, some folks met are 'special' and this trip was no exception.

Will long treasure meeting Marilyn from Detroit.  Lovely lady who allowed self to drop 'shy' and chat with MOI and others known.  Was first trip to Hawaii for Marilyn and she fell in love with the islands.  The joy in her face was a sight to behold.  Went to Hilo Hatties with and other places and she was kind enough to have dinner with on last night.

Marilyn has heart set on a hand bag from "Coach' and I do so hope she gets one.  The salesperson in shop was queried about what the product be.  Is it proper to call the item a 'purse' or handbag'.  Not missing a beat, Leslie, the lovely salesperson, said;  "Walmart and Target have purses, Coach has handbags.  Fancy that.  Mind, were this old geezer to swing a 'handdbag', best to have one with cache...
Karen and Chip from Victoria, BC were another 'special pair met.  Karen with the 'laugh' and Chip being so understated.   They were in Hawaii to enjoy selves and see daughter graduate.

Karen and MOI just hit it off and it was with undiluted delight that we met up each day to chat, share a meal or go somewhere.

Holiday was booked with Murray but schedules were so different.  I am day person and Murray is a night person.  He saw his Hawaii and I saw mine.  I like to think he got as much out of the holiday as MOI.  If not, OH WELL!

There are other snaps yet to make way on blog, some will be coming from Marilyn and some from Karen.  This old geezer did not have time to take endless snaps.

This trip was spent visiting the Mighty MO, royal palace, going down in ocean in the submarine, visiting mates and just enjoying all of the love felt.  No matter how many visits have been had or will be had, each is different.  Each allows MOI to create new memories to further colour the ones already held dear.

You, the dear reader, will just have to check back to get more information about the holiday and see more snaps.

In reply to many emails received about the block party held in Linda on May 8th.  There are snaps of and a story to tell.  Was getting sorted out for holiday and wanted to reflect on the event to give full import to the day.  Have no fears, there is a story to tell...

Aloha for now and do check back, the last has not been said of Waikiki.  More Tales from Waikiki to come.

ONE DAY MORE!

In one day the LINDA DRUG OUT will unfold. Neighbours will rally in support of showing crime and drugs the highway. The size of crowd is huge if just one more person stands on road to stop crime. ONE DAY MORE...

DO YOU HEAR THE PEOPLE SING?

On Saturday, there will be loads of patriotic music to cheer on the crowd
of neighbours wanting to bring 'civic pride' to road

"So I do, madonna; but to read his right wits is to read thus: therefore perpend, my princess, and give ear."

Tuesday past, MOI received a visit from Sheriff Steve Durfor.  It would seem that we all were wrong in thinking that the great man had ignored us.  Steve was out of town and was 'gobsmacked' to read blog and see how horrid we all had been to.

My dears, you know it is of import when the elected Sherrif for Yuba County makes time in schedule to come out and meet with you.  So great is the demand made on the sheriff's schedule, after all his is a heavy burden, what with taking into hand the problems of both the living and the dead of Yuba County.  "Book 'em and Bag 'em" springs to mind, but I am a very wicked chap and should not think out loud...

Sheriff Durfor did a walkabout with this old geezer and was most keen to learn what troubles the Linda Villa faced.  Sheriff Durfor is not the sort to blow smoke up your arse, so his questions and answers were very personal and showed his deep concern that the community was not feeling served by his coppers.

I got the feeling that Sheriff Durfor is willing to 'think' out of the box, be creative and see if the a different slant on things can be just as legal as the 'set way of the past'.  All but told MOI that being a copper has made one realize that fixing the 'small problems' keeps the problems from becoming massive.   Steve is passionate in belief that preventing crime is as important as solving crime.

In the bright light of day, it was 11 in morn, Steve Durfor is hard to miss, his uniform is without a wrinkle, shoes highly polished and all is set off by the 4 stars that shine on collar.  You have to look closer to see what really counts in sizing up the man.  On his chest is nameplate, quite old, and some of the lettering is missing.  It goes back in time when he was not so great a personage.  Same nameplate, different title, a man who has been on a misson for years to do good in the community.

In a open manner, Sheriff Durfor allowed this old geezer to vent his anger about crime and less than perfect support of some coppers under his command.  Not all coppers are equal, but Sheriff Durfor never allowed self to sell his coppers short, they are all a 'work in progress' and he has every belief that one and all will come round to being more perfect.  If nothing else, Sheriff Durfor is keenly aware of the 'image problem' faced by not just his coppers but most in general.

I do not have a special pass with the coppers and Sheriff Durfor is not showing favour.  Each and every person has the right to contact the elected sheriff and ask questions.  One and all can ring up the coppers and have them come out to deal with concerns.  Not every visit will turn out in favour of, that is the way of it, but each call makes the coppers more aware of what is going on on road and in community.

In the end, it is the bond between coppers and community that makes change happen.  Brassed off I have been in the pass at being blown off by some coppers, and have to remind self that education on both our parts is on-going.  Truth be told, MOI can be a right arse when he gets on high horse.

With but a few days to go before block party, I am very put upon and will have to wait until the big day to have another chat with Sheriff Durfor.  With many of the community out, I will have to queue up and wait turn.  Like the thought of so many in community chatting with the coppers.  One queue worth standing in should think...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ILA

ILA IS 102 TODAY. HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR LADY.

TEDDY ROOSEVELT WAS PRESIDENT WHEN THIS LADY WAS BORN

A Granny to tenants at Linda Villa will be coming by for a little cake.  Very special she be.  Born in 1908, she be 102 today.  Fancy that...

Can you imagine?  1908!

The first ever beauty contest is held in Folkestone, England.
Devastating earthquake hits Messina, killing 100,000.
"Young Turk" revolution in Ottoman Empire.
Bulgaria declares independence from Ottoman Empire.
Bosnia-Herzegovnia annexed by Austro-Hungary.
Crete votes for union with Greece (union is not fully effected until 1913).
"Tunguska Event" - meteor impact in Siberia. The explosion is equivalent to 1,000 Hiroshma bombs.
SOS becomes the standard radio distress symbol.
Mother's Day is celebrated for the first time.
Ford Model T. introduced.
Sixteenth Amendment to US Constitution (authorizing Federal government to collect income tax) is ratified.
Boy Scouts founded.
Olympics hosted in UK.
Teddy Roosevelt was president.

What a world of change "Ila" has seen during her life.

With a little luck, Ila will live as long as one of me Brit relatives, lived until 108, 4 days old.  Right, I just had to do that, crow about me brilliant family.  Shame on me.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the lovely lady, many more to come.
