HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME

The old geezer thinks that a half priced cake to give to folks known is good enough.  The thinking being that I can not taste it, what do I care if the cake is a little stale...
Right, you have got to imagine the old geezer sitting down to the birthday cake and seeing the fire that will happen due to all of the candles lighted on the cake.
Do you not just love thoughtful birthday gifts?  All of the items that make getting through another year more easy.
There will some who will find this cake a bit much.  Rather think it suits MOI perfectly.  When I saw the cake, it made me laugh...
More items to mark the big day.
There be a group of mates who feel that having a birthday celebration at the graveyard is perfect.  Sort of a dry run for the day when the hole in the ground is me final resting place.

Truth be told, all of the snaps are a bit of a giggle.  I am going to go to supper with a group of friends and am quite sure that the celebration will rank right near the top as a perfect birthday happening.

How the years fly by.  Someone told MOI that it was horrid to grow old.  Rubbish.  I may not be able to do some of the things that could be done when younger but now have more tools to cope with life.  Each day is an adventure.  What wonderful people I have met during the last year.  Friendships have become stronger.

Just think of all the wondrous things that await me in the coming year.

I am so happy this day as I am reminded by folks dear to that I am special.  I like that feeling very much...

UITWAAIEN

I know, there be some that think the old geezer is friendless.  I have more than one...

There is one friend.  A very dear friend.  After many sleepless night, I have found the perfect work to describe what it is that he does on a daily basis.  That would be the word of the day highlighted in this post.

You see, this very dear friend, well, he loves to take long walks in the mountains.  Not just short walks, but the kind that take hours to complete, and are so long that he has to carry a loo roll with and water...

Talk about walks off the beaten path.  Am told tales of being shot at, finding any number of spent bullets, weird things thrown out of vehicles and blown away cash.  So remote are the nature walks that he is not even within connecting distance of a tower to receive mobile calls.

Truth be told, this old geezer loves to walk, but it has to be in a setting where there are people to admire and buildings to look at.  Rather thought it was odd for my friend to pick a setting so desolate for his walks.

Then I came upon this word.  Says it all...

Mind, there must be something missing in the walks.  The head is not so clear and this dear friend is always walking in the 'wind' that I pass...

'WHAT'S YOUR POO TELLING YOU'

Researchers have revealed why, for some, going to the bathroom can be 'like a religious experience or an orgasm'.
A Princeton doctor has revealed the key is the passing of a large stool.
This, he claims, can stimulate nerves in the body more usually associated with orgasm.

CARE-A-VAN REPLIES

I want to reassure you that we do provide outreach every other week in Waikiki to our clients and all homeless we see while doing outreach. We also do night outreach once every two weeks in Waikiki. During outreach, we provide social services and referrals to different service agencies. We also inform them of the shelters that are available and pass out hygiene and snacks. We let new clients know about our services in our drop-in center and at our other locations. Many of the homeless in Waikiki are familiar clients to us. Our services are for all homeless, regardless of mental state or addiction as we aim to service all homeless that we encounter.
All of our services are free and voluntary. We can provide and inform individuals of our services, however, if they take our services is up to them.
Please, let me know if you have any other questions.
MICHELLE IP
Homeless Adult Coordinator

The Waikiki Health Center is responsible for operating an outreach programme to the homeless.  That programme is Care-A-Van.  I rather think that the reply received was from that part of their operation.

Waikiki Health Center is a wonderful resource for poor people to us to gain access to medical attention and on-going care with their health problems, physical or mental.  I have no argument with that.

I wonder about the outreach programme to the homeless.  Does it really solve problems or does it pander to the homeless?

The reply received is so very "PC".  Does it really answer any questions?

It still bothers me that an outreach worker from Care-A-Van, visited a 'client' on the street and rang up an ambulance for the individual.  The 'client' may well have been feeling poorly, but he had a wheelchair, probably a bus pass, and could have got to hospital on his own.  I know of another homeless man who had a severely swollen leg, infected, and barely able to walk, and he was able to get self to hospital.  It did not cost hundreds of dollars to do that.

Makes one think that the 'bright young things' that do outreach, are pandering to the homeless and not mindful of the cost of rides in ambulances for individuals who might not require.  Mind, it is only 'public monies' and there is an endless stream of that...

The homeless in Waikiki are a clever lot.  Do you not think they already know where there can go?  They know and pick and choose what they want.  Mail service, EBT, free clothes.  The good stuff to be had with no strings attached.

DID I GET IT RIGHT?

In the morning of my life I shall look to the sunrise.
At a moment in my life when the world is new.
And the blessing I shall ask is that God will grant me,
To be brave and strong and true,
And to fill the world with love my whole life through.
(Chorus)
And to fill the world with love
And to fill the world with love
And to fill the world with love my whole life through.
In the noontime of my life I shall look to the sunshine,
At a moment in my life when the sky is blue.
And the blessing I shall ask shall remain unchanging.
To be brave and strong and true,
And to fill the world with love my whole life through.
(Chorus)
In the evening of my life I shall look to the sunset,
At a moment in my life when the night is due.
And the question I shall ask only I can answer.
Was I brave and strong and true?
Did I fill the world with love my whole life through?

ADVENTURES CONTINUE

Multi-Sided Robert

Travel is always an adventure, and it requires a little thought before departure and some reflection upon arrival at destination.  The old geezer recently set out on another adventure and some days have past since arrival and thought it was time to share.  Fancy that...

I departed Dunsmuir, Ca., on the south bound train that departs in the wee hours of the new day.  Just past 12am on the new morn of the 1st.  Rumour has it that the train is always late, but my experience held no such late schedule.  The train pulled into the station on time and departed on time.

Allow the old geezer t back up a bit.  New found friends, Bill and Margie, lovely couple who lived cross the road from cottage house sat, had the old geezer over for dinner night before departure AND stayed up and drove to station.  Margie packed a cheese sandwich, bit of cake and beverage, as to keep the old geezer from pangs of hunger during the long journey.  What a lovely couple and ever so kind to this old geezer.

The trip to Sacramento passed with out incident and we arrived in Sacramento before schedule.  The layover in Sacramento was to be 4 hours but having made a new friend on train, there was someone to pass the time until the next leg was taken.

The train did not go direct to Reno, one had to switch to a coach.  That was OK, as AMTRAK uses a company that has rather grand coaches, equipped with WIFI and an ever so lovely driver.  We departed on time and arrived in Reno ahead of schedule.  How is that for laying waste the rumour of lateness, or was it pure luck?

Avid readers will remember that the old geezer was want to find a suitable situation in Dunsmuir and the suggestion was made that Reno might hold better promise.

The old geezer had chatted with a chap met on the INTERNET, who told of a possible housing situation in his home.  His verbal description sounded like a 'slice of heaven' as did the chap sound ever so lovely.  Mind, one never knows how things things will turn out, neither of us knew the other from a 'bucket of paint' and there was always the possibility that it would not be suitable for either.

There was some worry, not much, but one has to trust these things to fate from time to time.

The chat agreed to meet at train schedule and he did.  Ever so gracious he was and told that at very least, accept the hospitality for week end and see how one felt.  How could one refuse?

The house turned out to be on a street that could have been out of "Leave To Beaver", lovely road and ever so charming house. Huge house, containing 4 'en suite' bed rooms, with loads and loads of room.  Back garden contained a brilliant swimming pool, lovely potted blooming flowers and TWO 'hot tubs'.  Talk about posh.

The bedroom assigned to the old geezer was on top floor, that is to say first floor, with two others being downstairs.  A 4 poster bed and comfy wing backed chair catching me eye right off.  It was quite lovely to strip off and take a lovely HOT shower before taking a wee nap before dinner.

Four days have passed since arrival and each day has been lovely.  Jack, the new found friend, is truly a lovely chap and he has introduced the old geezer to mates who have come by to swim or have dinner with.  Quite a collection of interesting chaps so far, but will get into that later.

There are three dogs in the home, not bothersome types and no real problem dealing with.  Actually, all three are well mannered.

There is another old geezer living in the house, he has been here for some years and fits into the scheme like a card carrying member of the 'family' Jack has set up in his home.  A complete lack of drama....

This old geezer is always in awe of other old geezers who kept eye on the 'golden years' and manage to have a brilliant retirement.  My education and life experiences should have held that true for self, but as one all knows too well, this old geezer has not done.  Me bad, as the young would say.  Truth be told, I used 'awe' not 'envy' to describe the great divide between Jack and self.  Rather think that sums it up best and am only ever so thankful to have landed a situation that seems suited well to this old geezer.

There are minor details to work out, all having to deal with paper work to complete to place on the on proper register for me benefits, and rather think that will sort itself in good order.

I have not taken any new snaps of yet but rest assured will fairly quickly, want to make sure that Jack is comfy with the idea first.  Not all are keen to be on the INTERNET.

It is Day 4 and this old geezer has yet to set foot into a casino.  Did not travel here to camp out in front of fruit machines, but think there will be a visit to one over the long week-end and no doubt a penny fruit machine will gobble up me offering.

As the heading told, the adventure continues and will no doubt have much more to offer in the days ahead...

DUNSMUIR SOLITUDE

Robert De Frees - Roughing It
Whatever else can be said of the old geezer, not being willing to rough it is not one of them.  The wee cottage put up at is not without it's drawbacks.  Least of which is lack of hot water.  Did you ever stop to think how grand it is to step into the shower in the morn and be greeted by endless flow of hot water?  Sort of makes for a lovely start to the coming day.

My shower is COLD, tempered only by my boiling water to splash on when the ice starts to form on head.  One learns rather quickly to not keep too long bathing.  One must tell true that it does get the motor running, straight for the kettle and a cuppa of hot tea.

Mind, the sofa makes out into a most comfy bed and a good night's sleep is had.  Removing the hearing device all but guarantees that the whistle of the arriving trains into Dunsmuir will not be heard, or anything else.

My solitude is not a burden, have always been able to entertain me self and there are books to read and NPR on the small radio.  This old geezer has had much to contemplate.  Like where he might land when The Big Kahuna returns and starts to tear up the cottage further.  Daily walks have of yet revealed no diggs that would suit and am beginning to wonder of my travels will take me east and Broadway...

The folks in Dunsmuir are grand, there is no complaint there.  You, who follow me adventures, are 'au fait' with me lame leg.  While greatly improved, it still can carry but so far before it lets me know that it can not bring me back if I continue.  Most of the spots found are out of town and with no vehicle, it it too great of a problem to overcome.  There was on place, a 4 floor walk-up and that simple is not possible.  One keeps looking, but the prospects are not too bright.  I have no desire to live in Mt. Shasta or Weed, as public transport is limited and winter will come sooner than later.

Many have sent emails to wondering why the flow of posts has slowed.  Partly due to library being open a limited number of days and hours.  Partly due to the old geezer not knowing what to impart without coming off as whining.  I do try to keep all happy and am ever so honoured that so many keep peeking and catching up on posts they might have missed in the past.

To sum up,I am completely clueless as to how this adventure will turn out OR where I may wind up next.

The Big Kahuna is of the opinion that the old geezer just likes to keep adding miles to his trainers and can not stay in one place too long.  Fancy that...

THERE WILL ALWAYS BE AN ENGLAND

My dears, there are times that emails and posted comments dictate the course me post will take for the day.  Last two days faithful readers from UK have been following the trials and tribulations of the old geezer in large numbers and feel obligated to chat about that.

The blog gets hits from all over America and Europe and some places that still gobsmacked the old geezer.  Given that the old geezer is right proud of his English roots, it warms me heart to have so many from across the pond do a peek in so oft.  This morn, checking me stats revealed that there were 33 from UK reading at that moment.   London to be sure, but there were hits from Manchester and Brighton as well.  Over the moon the old geezer is when so many take the time to peek in.  Mind, given time time difference, it must be a bit of a wind down for many.  Truth be told, there are times when the old geezer feels that the offering of the day is a wee bit like a stale biscuit.  I do tend to worry...

There are loads of questions asked of the old geezer and I shall try to answer many of them now.

In a few days, the old geezer will re-pack his Gladstone bag and head out for the small town near the Oregon border.  2000 souls live there joined by one, ME.  The offer to collect meself from a dear friend in his mountain retreat is an offer much appreciated.  Nothing grand, just a warm place out of the cold night air and full of ALOHA, coming from the concern and affection of the offer maker.  Sorry, some do not like the old geezer to bang on about in public, rather think you will know who the lovely chap be.

Do I miss the hostel and Hilo?  Too right you be if you guessed I did.   Circumstances conspired to make "Tea and Tidy" difficult, the stair were too much and getting use to the hearing device was annoying.  I miss me chats with Justin and Hilo Hattie.  When the old geezer was laid up they were ever so kind to.  I miss all of the lovely folks who came to visit the hostel and the different stories of the world heard on a daily basis.  I miss Albert and even miss Norman.  I miss Terry at the cafe and am knackered at hard feeling that seem to have come with another thought to be understand to me 'old geezer condition'.  Sadly, there be some who think the old geezer a wee bit too dramatic at times and present conditions of illness smack of the old geezer being an idle layabout.  That is the way of it.

I have made much of me feeling that I had no value, but the comments and emails tell me otherwise.  I am ever so touched by all of the love flowing my way.  Truly.

They tell the old geezer that the small town travelling to is lovely this time of year.  Month of August and September will be nice, there is no doubt.

Offers have come in for the old geezer to cross the pond and settle in UK.  One has to take all of the offers with much thought.  Crossing the pond at me age might well lead to me never returning to America and am not quite sure that is best at the moment.  I am considering and still need to work out how cash would hold up in a very dear place to live.  Mind, as one told, there is always a summer caravan in Brighton going unused.  Fish and chips on wheels...

Rather think that my not mentioning the name of the town going to is a bit trying for some.  No great secret, just do not have me travel brochures ready to lay on you.  Rather think I will do quite a chat up on when it is time.

The plan is for James and the family to load up the van and drive me to the new town.  They want to do a road trip and see the old geezer arrive safely.  There is always another day for the train.

I will keep all posted as to me progress.

'BROADWAY' IS NOT A 'GAY' WORD

That 'this old geezer' uses Broadway tunes to illuminate his humble attempts to add colour to his posts comes as no great surprise to avid readers of this very public diary.

What is a shocker is that newbies to me style of expression latch onto this 'trick' and make something sordid out of.

When last looked, 'Broadway' IS NOT the private reserve of a special interest group.  Were it, the countless theatres on the 'Great White Way' would have gone dark ages ago.

Never let it be said that folks who canvas the endless posts on FACEBOOK, do not take note of some and pass judgement on.  This old geezer is gobsmacked that harmless filmed bits used to 'splash out' praise for a place known would take it so very wrong.

Gutted even...

Many is the time this old geezer took his place in a theatre and had an 'enchanted evening'.  The world outside went dark and only light and sound of any import was that taking place on the stage in front of.  The music of Broadway made life easier to deal with.

The use of Broadway tune to get a message across is not unique to this old geezer.  Remember well I do that a former president of the United States used a catchy Broadway tune to make folks aware of his name and to think fondly of when in the voting booth.  LBJ was the president and "Hello, Lyndon' ala 'Hello, Dolly' the tune.

It is indeed quite true that the old geezer is a colourful character.  Truth be told, I am in on the trick...

If it be true that 'to love another person is to see the face of God', I do try ever so hard.

I end with another BROADWAY tune...
