Truth be told, Putin and his policies concerning gays in Russia are no different than the views held in other parts of the world. More extreme and in you face but no different.
There have always been gay men and women in Russia, and we all know that some very 'gay' Russian artists were tolerated and even treated rather grandly.
The policies of society in America and Europe concerning homosexuals have changed over the years. There is more acceptance but there is still a large part of the population that will never really accept the idea of homosexuals being equal in society. That is just the way of it.
Any homosexual who is 'open' has to know deep down that there was always going to be a price to pay for being homosexual. It is not easy. The best that one can do is to try and live a life that allows 'straight' society to see that there is nothing to fear.
